Hamstrings are long, and they cross the hip and the knee joint, performing two essential motions: knee flexion and hip extension and helping with flexion of the knee and extension of the hip, the hamstrings are stabilizers of the knee joint.

Like their opposing counterpart (quadriceps), the hamstrings are active while resting, and they get activated upon weight-bearing activities such as walking, running, and jumping. A healthy hamstring is essential to movements, mobility, and stability of the knee joint, As they are the ACL’s protectors. The hamstrings protect the anterior cruciate ligament or the ACL by acting on the shinbone (tibia) by pulling it backward or posteriorly, and action that protects the ECL from being stretched too far beyond the ACL’s limits.

The Menisci & Their Relationship With Knee Soft Tissue

Menisci As a full term for two menisci of the knee: the medial and lateral meniscus. The menisci are “C” shaped, the medial meniscus as an elongated “C” shaped structure on the inner side of the knee, and the lateral meniscus is the smaller “C” shaped structure on the outer knee. The menisci are a common source of knee pain, and tears are more common in the medial meniscus, also the immovable meniscus. A lateral meniscus (the moveable inner meniscus) may also tear, but a torn lateral meniscus is not as common as a torn medial meniscus. 

The hamstring muscle has a special relationship with the medial meniscus as well as the ACL. The medial meniscus does not directly attach to the hamstring; however, it has an indirect capital connection to the semimembranosus muscle (outer hamstring muscle). 

The medial meniscus and the ACL do not connect directly, but They are somewhat related to a common attachment with the transverse ligament. The only direct ligamentous attachment the medial meniscus has is wet the medial collateral ligament.
